Aragon is one of the Spanish regions with fewer inhabitants and one of the NUTS-III regions in Europe (regions having a population density lower than 24,8 inhabitants per square km-). Moreover, the 80% of the population in Aragon is located in Zaragoza city.
This situation shows an unbalanced demographic panorama, with all the negative implications it has in terms of cultural, social and economical decline among others.
It is in this context that the Immigration and Aragon’s New Inhabitants Service of the Aragonese Federation of Municipalities, Regions and Provinces, determines to undertake the management of this project that is co-financed by the Aragonese Regional Government through the Labour and Immigration Administration. Such project provides a service capable of putting in touch municipalities interested in and capable of receiving new inhabitants with the inhabitants themselves. The situation seems adequate for bringing together two apparently unconnected realities but, at the same time, two situations that, if brought together in an organized way, can guarantee the revitalization of rural areas and the quality of life for many people and families.
In demographic terms, we are facing problems both of population ageing and of depopulation of rural areas. On the other hand, we have people that either because they are immigrants or just because they want to change their way of life by going away from the big metropolitan areas, are interested in moving into municipalities capable of offering them housing and employment in some cases and, for all of them, quality of life and long-term opportunities.
